Use your Samsung Galaxy Y as Internet Access Point

One of the cool features of the Samsung Galaxy Y that is not to be found in other and older Galaxy smartphones in its class is the ability to share it's 3G internet connection to other Wi-Fi enabled devices like laptops, tablets and smartphones. This feature is commonly found on higher end Samsung Galaxy tabletss and smartphones but it is a nice treat from Samsung to have it included in this entry level Android phone.

I had a previous post of similar topic in this blog but that one deals with the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Since the naming of the feature in the menu is vastly different from that of Samsung Galaxy Tab, I took the liberty to post this one specifically for the Samsung Galaxy Y.

Having a personal Wi-Fi hotspot in your possession wherever you go offers lots of convenience to people who prefer using their laptop in browsing the internet and reading and sending email, in the absence of Wi-Fi access points in their location or even at home without regular internet  connection.

Once you activate the feature, other people can connect to your Samsung Galaxy Y and use its 3G internet connection to browse the Internet. The only downside of this feature is the maximum number of concurrent users which is set to 5 only.

To make sure that only people whom you authorize to connect will be able to use the service, you have the option to set WPA-PSK security in your device. meaning, you can set a passphrase or password which you can share with your users prior to connection just like in a dedicated Wi-Fi router/access point.

The procedure is very simple and outlined below:

1. Go to "Settings" and tap on "Wireless and Networks",

2. Tap on "Tethering and portable hotspot",

3. Tap to check the "Portable Wi-Fi Hostspot",

4. As soon as you see the "Portable Wi-Fi- hotspot AndroidAP7711 active" below the "Portable Wi-Fi hotpsot, you and your users can already connect to the Galaxy Y Access Point using your various devices but in this instance, the connection is "Open" and unsecured. What you have to do to enable security is  tap on the "Configure Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" after which you will have the option of setting your own Network SSID or leave the default "AndroidAP7711". Click on "security" below the Network SSID and choose WPA2 PSK in the dropdown list. Input your password or passphrase and you're good to go.

By the way, before you do the above-mentioned things, make sure that your phone has enough load credits if you are on prepaid cellular service and that your network's APN is properly configured to browse over 3G. If you can browse the internet on your Galaxy Y prior to setting up the Access Point, then you will have no problem. If you cannot access the internet, check on your 'Mobile Networks Settings" and see if the "Use Packet Data" is checked or activated. This setting determines your phones capability to access the internet given enough  load credits and proper APN configuration.

In my case, prior to doing these things, I subscribe first to a day's unlimited internet with my Mobile Network or cellular provider to enjoy unhampered browsing with my pals and family members.

  1. Hi. I just got my galaxy y and was thrilled to discover that this budget phone can also be a wifi hotspot. I got a question though. You mentioned earlier that you've got to have enough load credits to be able to use this feature, do you have any idea of how much is usually charged against your load when you use this feature? Also, you mentioned that you subscribe to unlimited internet for one day to enjoy this feature, do you have any idea if this will also work for postpaid plans? Your answer will be very much appreciated.:)

  2. Hi. I think you got confused with my statements. To clarify: The Wi-Fi Access Point feature does not need load credits to work. I just mentioned that you need to have enough load credits so that you can enjoy unhampered Internet browsing. In the Philippines, the mobile telcos usually charge P10 per 15 minutes of internet browsing. For a whole day unlimited internet surfing fun it usually will cost you P50. There's also unlimited internet surfing for a whole month with postpaid plans which usually cost P999.

  3. Hi ive just recently bought my galaxy Y, and i tried using wifi tethering with my globe prepaid, my ipad can connect through the tethered wifi but it cannot receive any data, why is that? kindly help many many thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hi. If your ipad can connect to the galaxy y AP but does not receive data. Please check your galaxy y if it can connect to the internet via 3G by itself. If it cannot, check the packet data and APN settings I've mentioned at the last portion of my article. I presume you have enough prepaid load credits for 3G internet browsing. After your galaxy y connects to 3G. Try tethering again. Yoi should be able to share the galaxy y's 3G internet this time.

  7. hi.. got my galaxy y recently from Smart but how about if i will connect my phone to the internet via my PC's internet connection???

  8. Hi Alfred, in that case you should install a dedicated wireless access point or router in your home so that your PC and Galaxy Y will share the same internet connection from your ISP.

  9. hi, i put a sun cellular sim in my new samsung galaxy y and i have enough load to register into the internet and i successfuly register it so i can use it for 3 days but i can't connect to the internet, wat will im gonna do?..should i activate it or something to use my load and the same time my internet..

  10. Check the APN of Sun Cellular in the Mobile Network Settings under "Access Point Names". It should be the correct APN for sun cellular then make sure that the "Use Packet Data" is checked. You should be able to connect to the Internet by then. Just google the APN of Sun Cellular to get the APN values.

  13. Hi, what if wifi is not turned on? And I accidentally used my internet. It will eat my load right? Is there something I can do to just set wifi to default? Thanks much...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Just leave the "use packet data" unchecked in the mobile network settings. This will ensure that you will not accidentally use 3G or GPRS when not over a wifi network.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Where I can find that settings? Thank you.

  16. Read my post about APN's. Use the search box in my blog and type APN.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hi Joezhel, you might get confused by my previous post on APN's because it was for the Galaxy Tablets. To disable browsing over 3G and GPRS,follow the guide below:
    1. Tap "Settings"
    2. Tap "Wireless and Networks"
    3. Scroll to "Mobile Networks" at the bottom and tap it.
    4. Under "Mobile Network settings", tap "Use Packet Data" to uncheck it. The check mark is colored green when checked and colored grey when unchecked. It should be grey.

  18. Hi,
I need your expertise on this.
Im having no luck using portable wifi hotspot function of my Galaxy Y phone. I have tried using my AcerOne win7 starter netbook to connect to it. I tried the Samsung Vibrant connect to it and vice versa. Tried galaxy Y to galaxy Y and vice versa. The Wi-Fi status shows connected but showing page cannot be displayed. Tried using firefox chrome IE, having no luck. Even tried changing the portable wifi name, tried OPEN and WPA security option. I have used Wi-Fi access point. Tried to connect to two different wifi access point. I have tried putting minutes to use unlimited data, disabled wifi and enabled packet data and connect to the correct access point name of the carrier. Still having no luck. I havent consulted samsung service center at this point.

Any input will be appreciated. Thanks in advance =)

    1. I have the exact same issue with my Galaxy Y using Globe's internet settings. Every device I try to connect to the created hotspot shows it's connected, but it is unable to browse. I on the other hand have no problems browsing on my phone. Did you try resetting the phone as he suggested? The portable hotspot feature was one of the main reasons I bought this thing and I can't get it to work. Hope somebody finds a fix soon.

      Delete
  19. Hi, I think your problem lies in the configuration of your 3G/GPRS settings. Consult your mobile provider for the correct APN (Access Point Name). If you are from the Philippines, may I know your mobile provider?

You should be able to connect to the Internet within your Galaxy Y first using 3G/GPRS. As soon as you can do it, you should have no problem making your phone a Wi-Fi hotspot.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have called my carrier and obtain the correct APN. I have no problem getting internet connection when connected to either wifi or 3G.

Im not sure why portable wifi hotspot won't still work on either of the connections. (Wi-Fi/ 3G)

I have used the Samsung T959 mobile AP, and another galaxy Y portable wifi hotspot option but none of these work.

When a phone is trying to connect to the created wifi hotspot, it shows connected to it, but cannot get online.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi Shane, it's weird that you cannot make the hotspot feature work with your Galaxy Y despite being able to connect to the internet using 3G. Normally the Galaxy Y will disable its Wi-Fi before it broadcast the 3G. And it doesn't matter if the devices connecting to it are iPads, netbooks and laptops or cellular phones with Wi-Fi as long as you don't exceed the maximum 5 devices at any given time.
I guess you will have to try resetting your Galaxy Y to factor defaults and if it still don't work, bring back your Galaxy Y to Samsung and have it checked as a last resort.

  28. Hi! i just got my new samsung galaxy y and i am so curious about these "Tethering and portable hotspot'. When this app. is already ativated, my phone connect into it. Can i really connect on my own "Tethering and portable hotspot" or NOT??? Thanks a lot :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi Charmaine, the tethering and portable hotspot works by letting you have your own Internet access point. Once you have it activated, Your Wi-fi capable devices like cellphones, tablets (Android, Ipad and iPhone) and computers will be able to access the Internet. Your Samsung Galaxy Y serves as the broadcasting medium and it uses your 3G/GPRS to hook into the Internet. There is a limit though to the number of devices which can connect simultaneously to your Access point. Only 5 devices are allowed. When you have it activated at home, think of your home as Starbucks or any mall with Wi-Fi. No need for you to subscribe to a wired ISP. I suggest you subscribe to unlimited data access with your cellular provider to enjoy it better. In the case of tethering, you connect your Galaxy Y to your PC or laptop via USB and then your laptop or PC will be able to access the Internet. If you do this, no other device can connect to the Internet except your PC or laptop where you connected your Galaxy Y. The portable hotspot is much better. You can even use it to amuse your friends. Better yet, charge them for Internet connection if they want to connect to the internet using your own hotspot.. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi lakhminder, unfortunately there is no way to signout gmail from your Android phone. The gmail account that you used during the very first time that you opened your Android phone becomes the default account and the only way for you to change it is to reset the phone to factory defaults. With regards to the Sim contacts, Android does not classify or identify it within the contacts list. If you wanna import or export your sim contacts to and from the SD card or vice versa there's something you can do. While in the contacts list, press the "menu" button at the left side of the home button, a dialog box will pop-up and you can choose from the following options: Import or Export from SD card and Import/Export to/from SIM card.

Hi litomella..it's panyang..thanks for your advice..i've tried it but still there is no internet access.i've called the customer service of globe but only said it's a third party issue and can't do anything since it works fine on my phone. Is there other way to fix this issue? I can access the net from phone, the problem is no internet access when i tether or use wifi

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi Panyang, try resetting again your Samsung Galaxy Y to default factory settings and then input the correct APN. Afterwards, try accessing the Internet using the phone. If you are successfull, activate the Hotspot feature. On your first time to activate the hotspot feature, the phone will warn you that Wi-Fi will be turned off. click ok on it. You might have refused to turn off Wi-Fi on your very first attempt. When the Galaxy Y's hotspot feature is activated, its capability to receive Wi-Fi signal from other Access points is deactivated and replaced by its ability to send out Wi-Fi signal to other devices. If nothing works then you should ask your Samsung dealer for a replacement.

  50. Hi... I think there's a mystery behind the tethering of Samsung Galaxy Y. I have 2 broadband sim cards, SmartBro and Globe Tatoo. I tried to use the SmartBro sim with unlimited internet for 1 day and connected my laptop. Both my phone and laptop was able to access the internet and browse websites. I removed the SmartBro sim and inserted my Globe Tatoo broadband sim with unlimited internet for 1 day also. My laptop was able to connect to the phone but it says No Internet Access. My phone can browse to any websites my laptop cannot. Any thoughts about this? Is Globe preventing the Globe Tatoo broadband sim to work only for 1 device?

  51. Hi Carl, I am actually facing the same problem as you right now. Just got my Galaxy Y a few days back and with everything explained nicely by Litomella here (thank you) I still can't get my laptop to open any webpage even though it's connected to the wifi from my galaxy Y. :(

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hi guys, it actually takes a little while (about 1 or 2 minutes) before the laptop gets access to the Internet after getting connected to the Samsung Galaxy Y access point. Also sometimes, the notification bar or the system tray indicator on the laptop shows the wi-fi indicator with the yellow icon with an exclamation point indicating that wi-fi has no Internet access BUT upon refreshing the browser or typing in another URL, the webpage loads. I've tested this thing both with Smart and Globe(prepaid and postpaid)and it works. I'm going to shoot a video of the Galaxy Y and the laptop connecting to it and I'll post it here the soonest time possible to help you guys. Again I reiterate, if your Galaxy Y can connect to the Internet by itself thru 3G, it should and by all means be able to extend that Internet connection to the laptop. Wired (USB tethering) or wireless (portable wi-fi hotspot).

  58. hi its my first time to have an android phone. what applications do you suggest to download?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Litomella, I'm having doubts on your comment that you tried Smart and Globe (both prepaid and postpaid) to use Samsung Galaxy Y's tethering. It is true that SmartBro does work, I can connect to any websites on my phone and at the same time on my laptop simultaneously without any errors. But on Globe Tatoo, my phone only has the internet connection and not my laptop. You said that it will just take some time for the laptop go have an internet access but I waited for almost an hour and still no internet connection on my laptop. I know that my cellphone is working properly because tethering does work on my SmartBro and the fact that I can do this, I really know what I'm doing in using tethering. Globe prepaid does not work with tethering. Only my cellphone can access websites and not my laptop. I even tried to refresh my browser on my laptop over and over again and still no internet access. It does not get any valid IP Address at all.

  60. Good afternoon sir, I'm a samsung galaxy y user and I have some problems on making my phone as my internet connection for my laptop. Can you provide a step by step procedure on connecting it via USB?? thanks

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hi Carl, you might be right with the Globe tatoo USB SIM as I haven't tested that one specifically. The Globe prepaid and postpaid SIM's that I have tested were the regular cellphone ones and I can prove it working in front of you if only we are on the same room right now. For the benefit of us all, I will test the globe tattoo broadband SIM in a Galaxy Y as soon as I get my hands on one.

I do experience intermittent connection with tethering sometimes. I guess I am just more patient because no matter how many times I get connection error messages, I just repeat and repeat the procedure until I get connected. And connected I get all of the time. I guess the hardware manufacturer or Google's Android will need to be updated to make tethering seamless all the time. I do know some third party apps that does tethering for Android but I haven't tested any of it yet for the reason that it is not free, and tethering is a native feature that should not be sold for a fee.

I would to point out that I had this problem before and after I updated my phone's firmware to 2.3.6. I seem to have no trouble connecting to internet thru the phone's browser or thru usb tethering. But I can't seem to connect thru its portable hotspot, I did the same procedure you did, but making sure I had enough prepaid load and even registered to Globe's Super Surf Promo. Still no dice. I hope someone has a workaround for it.

  67. Hi again... out of curiousity, I bought Sun Cellular Broadband sim card and tested for tethering and it is also fine. My laptop got internet connection in less than 3 minutes but with Globe Tatoo, I even waited for almost 1 hour and keeps on refreshing my browser over and over again, still it does not get any IP address. I even tried to reset my cellphone to fatory settings and still no go for the Globe Tatoo. By the way, I both tested Globe Tatoo Broadband Sim and Globe Tatoo prepaid regular sim and both did not work. I tested Smart Broadband Sim and Smart regular prepaid sim and both worked. I only tested Sun Cellular Broadband sim in this case. I even went to Globe centers and addressed my issue. They checked on my settings and its all fine. They even don't know what's that cause of the issue. They even saw a lot of inquiries over the internet and on their database that there is actually an issue with Globe Prepaid for Samsung Galaxy Y tethering and one of their rep said that she will escalate the issue for resolution. They rolled out the speculation that the problem is on my cellphone because they said that tethering works on Smart and Sun.

  69. @Adel, just un-check the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot in the settings and un-check also the use Packet Data if you don't want to access the Internet in your smartphone.

    ReplyDelete
  70. @carl, thank you for sharing your experience with the Globe Tattoo broadband Sim. To know that you even went to Globe about the matter means that there must be something in the configuration of the Globe Tattoo product that blocks sharing in smartphones like the Galaxy Y. Have you tried the regular Globe cellphone Sim? (prepaid and postpaid). I suggest you try it and if the result is the same then I must be very lucky at the time when I was able to successfully share the Samsung Galaxy Y's Internet thru the hotspot feature. That was around last week of November and I used my friends' open line Samsung Galaxy Y to do it.

    ReplyDelete

  79. hi good evening!!! i bought my galaxy y 2 weeks ago.. and i have a big problem.. i need your expertise.. i have enough load by the start of the day but the end of the day, i dont know if it is by the simcard network (globe) or is it by my galaxy y.. every 30mins to 2 hours my load is always automatically deducting 10 to 15 pesos.. i am so confused and its getting me crazy cos im experiencing this for 5 days.. and now i want to throw my galaxy y phone cos i already brought it to the store where i bought it and they just reset the phone but after a couple of hours nothing changed.. its keep eating my load frequently.. grrrr!!!!

and also.. how can i switch my galaxy y from 3g to 2g.. cos i used my phone just for texting, calling and wifi..

  80. @08, please read this post http://android-googler.blogspot.com/2011/12/how-to-stop-samsung-galaxy-y-from.html

    This will solve your problem.

    ReplyDelete
  81. @shivali, to stop your phone's battery from draining prematurely, turn off wi-fi, gps and bluetooth when not needed.
For the SD card, check if it is defective or try reformatting it. The Galaxy Y has no such issues with SD cards.
And lastly try to update your Kies. If you have a working wi-fi setup at home, use Android sync manager app from the android market for you to seamslessly transfer to and from your PC. seldom use Kies because it is very poor in syncing and file transfer.

  82. @anonymous, consult your mobile operator for the correct APN or Access Point Name of your Mobile Network.

  83. @sasanka, as of now I'm not aware of any app that can enable you to watch live TV channels on your SAmsung Galaxy Y. I'll post it here once I come across anything from the internet.

  89. Dear Sir,

I just bought Samsung Galaxy Y 2 weeks ago and I'm not sure why my phone automatically shut down. When I tried to unlock, it is not responding (totally black), even I tried to press the power button quite long to ON it back. After I took out the battery, put in back and press the power button back, it's ON. Do you have any idea why this thing happened?

    Thanks for your advise.

    Bie

    ReplyDelete
  90. Hi Bie_Honey, some of my friends also experienced what your phone has gone through. What I advised to them was the same as what you did and the phone went back to normal.I am not sure what causes the automatic shutdown but if it happens again, I highly suggest that you immediately send it back to where you bought it for replacement. It might be some factory defect. My own galaxy Y also shut down like what happened to you but it was for a reason because my son accidentally dropped it. So far it's working perfectly since the incident.

  98. Hi!

no one seems to be able to answer this one.

i recently got a Samsung Galaxy Y. I keep unchecking the packet data option, but it checks itself every now and then and eats up my currency on the phone which i use for phone calls, this also, when im in a wi fi zone. why is this happening? how can i stop it??

    do let me know,
    thanks a lot!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Hi Ami Kay, the automatic checking of the packet data option is very unique to your phone and it is the first time that I have heard of someone having that problem. I suggest that you bring your phone back to your carrier (Telco) as they might have it locked for data subscription that's why you don't have the option to turn it off.
Try resetting your phone to default factory settings and try again.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I had the same problem before, even if I uncheck packet data some application on my phone turns it on again. I finally solved the problem by installing the APN Lock(CHR) which I downloaded from the play market (formerly android market). The buttons show the APN's in your phone you can click to disable or enable them, colors change from green (on) to red (off). This saved me a lot of load from my pre-paid account. I normally use WI-FI on my home network to connect to the net. Hope this helps.

  106. Yes there is. Just turn off the "use packet data" under the settings. To do it:

    1. Hi dessa, you need a google account to log in to the market plus a working wi-fi or 3G data connection. You don't need the usb cable to install apps from the android market. Once you are logged in, all the apps from the android market will be available to you. Some will be free and some paid.

  143. Hello! i have a samsung galaxy y and i followed your step by step procedure on how to use its portable hotspot feature. Unfortunately, all it does is get the device connected to the phone, but no data is being transmitted to the connected device. Please know that i have followed each step (turn on 3g connection, APN, etc.) and that my phone's 3g connection is working flawlessly. I have seen on the internet that this problem is very common with the galaxy y model. I also consulted Samsung (SM North Branch) about this but, unfortunately again, they did not know what was wrong with the phone. They even tested my sim with other models and it worked fine. I went to samsung early this year but up to now, they haven't contacted me for any solution to this problem. I am very frustrated that i can't use the full potential of my phone and that no one could give me answers. My girlfriend also has a galaxy y. we got ours a week apart (Brand New) and from different stores but we're having the exact same problem. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank You.

  145. For all Samsung Galaxy Y users who have problems using the portable wifi hotspot feature, I have the SOLUTION. you need to root your phone first. (instructions on rooting your phone is here http://galaxyygaming.blogspot.com/p/rooting.html) then download/install "barnacle" from google play (formerly market) to your phone. Then start the app with your 3g connection turned ON. Tap "Start" when the app opens. At first it will show some errors and then it will ask you to skip "wpa_supplicant". Tap "ok" or "yes" or "skip" (i cant remember which one, just agree to what it's suggesting). Then tap "Start" again and BINGO!!! you are now broadcasting your 3g connection. you can set up your connection name and password through the app's settings. its default connection name is barnacle and no password. im using my laptop connected to my phone's 3g right now. hope this helps! :)
